More conversations with Charlotte

Me: Mommy lived in this house when she was a little girl.
MC: Charlotte is a girl too!
Me: Yes
MC: Charlotte is a girl, and Mommy is a girl. TWO girls!
Me: Very good Charlotte, two girls!
MC: Daddy isn't a girl.  Daddy is a big boy.
Me: Yup, Daddy is a big boy.  Daddy is a man.
MC: And Frederick, Frederick isn't a big sister.
Me: You are right! He's a little brother :-)

We have this conversation a lot.  I think she likes being the only big sister ;-).

On another note, I'm enjoying every last day that Frederick isn't crawling.  As it stands, he can already pretty much get wherever he wants, just without any speed - he moves something like an inch worm as he hikes up onto all fours and then lunges forward.  I should get it on video!

He's the Easy One, Right?

I have said Frederick is the easy baby, right?   Except he already has some serious opinions about things.  Like removing anything from his hands, having his diaper changed, or holding still while I slip an outfit over his head and slip his arms through the sleeves.

Last night, while Fred was holding him and I was finishing dinner, Frederick was chewing on this plastic toy of Charlotte's(the freebie kind from Wendy's), but seemed to be mad because it isn't really meant for chewing on and didn't quite fit into his mouth very well.  Frustrated with the fussing and squirming, Fred decided to remove the toy from his dimpled little hands.  Bad idea.

Ensue screaming as intense as if his big sister just tried to twist his arm around a way that it doesn't go (she was very upset, when she found out trying to twist Brother's arm like a baby doll's really hurt him!).  You know, when there is no sound for long seconds before ear-piercing, heart-wrenching sounds start pouring from your baby's mouth?  That's what we had going on here. He arched his back and let loose.  He was in such a rage that he didn't even notice when I took him from Fred tried to return the toy to his possession.  In fact, the soundless part of the screaming was lasting so long, and the actual screaming for so short, that his lips started turning blue.  I freaked out a bit at the slightly blue tint, and gave him a little shake - at which he actually opened his eyes, realized that Mommy had him, and allowed himself to be consoled.

The kid isn't even 6 months old yet.   I'm pretty sure things are only going to get crazier around here.

5 Month Update

Can you believe this little guy has been around for so long and yet so little?  5 months seems such a short amount of time considering I can't remember what life was like before he arrived.  At the same time, the time has passed all too quickly.

At five months old, Frederick rolls all over the place.  In fact, changing his diaper can be difficult since he always wants to be on his tummy.  Once on his stomach he usually pushes up on to his hands and knees, a regular habit of the last week or so.  If you place a toy just out of his reach he will make frustrated grunts as he rocks back and forth, generally accomplishing movement in the opposite direction. Ha! He gets so mad.

Frederick can sit unassisted for several minutes, but rather stand whenever possible (assisted in that case, of course).    He gets VERY excited when I let him support himself at the coffee table while spotting him from behind.

For a kid who doesn't eat solids yet, he sure does love dinner time!  We set him up with a plastic spoon in the high chair while we eat.  Up until recently, Fred let him sit in his lap, but Frederick squirms way too much for that now!  He reaches and grabs for everything in sight and has overturned more than one glass.

He loves his big sister and smiles and laughs at her on car rides.  Much to Charlotte's dismay, he has also learned to pull hair.  She recently tied to sneak some cookie dough into his mouth.  Fortunately, Frederick doesn't seem to have much of a sweet tooth.

Except he has no teeth.  Charlotte had 4 at this point.   I must say I love his gummy grins!

Frederick's favorite toy is anything paper. Anyone know a good paper substitute that doesn't fall apart when it comes into contact with baby slobber?  He now cries when you take something away from him (or don't let him have) that he wants.  I also have to distract him with something if I want to leave the room; if he sees me walk out, he cries!

For a while he was even babbling, saying "Ma, ma, ma, ma."  It seems that is a skill he has forgotten, though, as I haven't heard any "Ma, Ma-ing" in a while.

Poor little man, doesn't get nearly the milestone attention of his big sister, but without a doubt, he is loved!

Oh yes, and did I mention, he loves to gum his toes?  If Charlotte isn't entertaining him, his feet certainly will!

Professional Photography? Nah.

So, I am no professional photographer.  I've had my Canon XTi for two years now and I'm still SUCH a beginner.  Yet I have come a long way since I first attempted to take a few pictures of my newborn baby girl.  She was the most beautiful thing that I'd ever set my eyes on, but I had NO idea how to take just the right any photo to capture the cuteness I saw.  (What?  If you want to get up close and use a flash you should use a macro setting??)  The most important thing I've learned?   Kids are freaking hard to take pictures of because they never stop moving.  Thus my camera is always in continuous shooting mode.  I take eight million photos in hope of capturing JUST the right moment.

I moved aside the dining room table and set up these spur of the moment shots last week.  I'm so thankful I don't have to pay for portraits of my little loves.  I DO however, need to find someone to take photos of ME with these little monkeys! Thankfully, I'm pretty sure I can rope Fred in.   (Though I'm toying with a few different ideas on how to set up the light...)

How Bazaar

Okay, really, the St. Helen's Bazaar.

You'd think I would have taken pictures of food, seeing that there were massive quantities of all things to eat, but I did not.  Instead I took photos of my kiddos.  And my feet.

We had a whole lot of fun surviving the heat, and thought you might like to see some pictures, though not of my feet, of course.
MC loves playing with her Daddy.

Who can resist taking a picture of a sleeping baby?

Charlotte REALLY enjoyed the bungee cord and the trampoline.

Cake Decorating

So, for Frederick's baptism, I decided to bake a cake.  For Christmas mom gave me these really cool puzzle cakes.  With everything going on, I hadn't yet had a chance to try one.  Yesterday I went to Michael's, found the cake decorating aisle, and freaked out a little.  Then I called my sister Christy (who, along with sister Helen, is taking a cake decorating class in Chicago right now) and begged for some guidance.  I came home with some food color gel, a handful of decorating tips, some couplers, and some featherweight bags.

Not too bad for my first attempt, huh?

I think I had the most fun playing with the food coloring.

Charlotte really wanted to help (I mean, what nearly 3 year old doesn't want to help with icing?), so I let her decorate this cupcake "all by herself." (which really means I never let go of the icing bag and shook the sprinkles into her hand).

Here is her creation.

I asked her to model and show it to me for the camera, and she was happy to oblige.

I see more decorating in her future, don't you?

Frederick's Baptism

So we finally baptized our baby boy today - he turned 5 months old on Friday.  I feel like such a slacker.  From now on, new goal: Sanchez babies are to be baptized before 12 weeks old.  He was way too squirmy and the gown would not stay put.  Not to mention he kept trying to eat it - probably not a good thing for 100 year old lace!

After Fr. Juan claimed Frederick for Christ our Savior by the sign of his cross by tracing the cross on his forehead, he invited us, the godparents, and family to do the same.

Grandmom Hotze gave us water from the Jordan River to use for Frederick's baptism.

We didn't have a private baptism, but it seems that all three of the babies baptized today were named Sanchez - the sweet twin girls in this shot.

Frederick is wearing his great, great-grandmother's baptismal gown.  Charlotte wore it at her baptism as well.

Frederick Christian Juan, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

Yes, you read that right. Fr. Juan found out that my brothers were baptized "Gerard" by Fr. Gerard Joubert and surprised us by throwing the Juan in there. Ha!

Unfortunately, I did not make it into this photo - darn 55mm prime lens (that I usually adore)!  I probably should have used the other lens, but figured this one would do better in the low light....

Ad that is the end of the pictures.  The one thing I've found with both of our children's baptisms is that it is so hard to get photos with other family because everything is so rushed.  Rush to change the baby into the gown after Mass, before the baptism.  Rush to snap a couple of photos and then rush to change him back out and get home where everyone is meeting for food and cake.  Maybe I'll put him back in the gown tomorrow and take a few shots just for fun...if I dare risk harming a 100 year old gown for the sake of a few photos...
