Photo Poll

After much debate, I've decided to enter Charlotte in a couple of magazine cover photo contests, one sponsored by Good Morning America and another by Parents magazine. While I love some of the photos I have taken with more of a "photo shoot" atmosphere, professional photos are not allowed as entries. To clarify, I don't consider those as good as a professional, but don't want to risk not having my entry considered because someone might think they could be.

Please vote in the poll on the right of my blog page for your favorite photo. I'd also appreciate any comments about your favorite picture! The poll ends 5/31 at 5 PM so I can submit my entry by midnight :-).

I know she's in the same shirt in three of the photos - I guess I need to either buy more clothes or branch out in what I dress her in!

Roseola?

We won't know for sure until Charlotte breaks out into a rash, but they eliminated anything serious. Aside from the fever and some very slight redness in her throat, our little girl is the picture of health. The fever should hang around for another day or more, but I'm not looking forward to the rash. So much for taking great 9 month photos! I guess they will have to be 9-1/2 month photos.

Other stats:

18 lbs, 7 oz - 50%
28.5 in - 75%

I can't believe she is getting to be such a big girl!

Darn It!

Charlotte is 9 months old today!

Yay!

I planned and even started a big post to commemorate the event, but things have just not gone our way this week...

First the bug bite drama - Charlotte still bears the marks of the bites, but no longer the bright-red puffiness.

Friday I unknowingly let Charlotte eat spinach that had been sautéed in butter. When her lunch ended up all over me a few hours later, I laid to rest any doubts I had about her still having a milk allergy. Poor baby girl did NOT feel well the rest of the day.

After a long day Saturday, some time in the heat at Ernest's graduation and a "late" night out to dinner, I noticed Charlotte felt a little warm, but wrote it off to the business of the day. Several hours later, I realized she was burning up. I've spent the last two days trying to get her to sleep like she should (last night was an evil battle that lasted until 2 am) and trying to keep her happy. We're on a regimen of Tylenol and Motrin to keep the fever at bay until I can get her into the pediatrician tomorrow - our terrible luck that she'd get sick over a holiday. Every now and then I let the medicine wear off, but the fever quickly bounces up to 101 - 103.

There are no other symptoms to her illness, aside from the irritability and screaming as though in extreme pain while I attempted to rock her to sleep. I am going to strike at least extreme pain off the list though, as my fed up self put her on the floor and turned on the light around 1:15 this morning where she played happily for half an hour.

Finally, after she fell asleep around 8 pm (only an hour late), Fred and I noticed a big puddle growing on our kitchen floor. The AC drainage pipes had backed up and the water was dripping through one of the vents. Not so good.

We lack the proper tools to blow it out, so Dad was here until close to 11 pm helping Fred (aka doing most of the work) clean out the blockage.

So much for a nice, relaxing, 3 day weekend to take care of the plethora of things that need to be completed around here.

Sigh.

Will let you know how the doctor's visit goes tomorrow. I have no experience with unexplained fevers, but I am going to guess an ear infection - at least that sounds like the simplest, easiest to resolve, issue.

Bad Mommy

If there was a Mommy test, there would be a question like this:
"True or False? If Mommy and Daddy aren't getting bitten by mosquitoes, they must not be out."

The answer is FALSE. I would fail. As it turns out, Charlotte is so sweet, those mosquitoes just won't stay away! To add to the Mommy Guilt, we discovered she must be extra allergic to bites, because they turned into little welts on her body.

A couple of days later and with the aid of some Benedryl, the worst of the puffiness subsided, but the red spots persist. Poor baby. Bad Mommy.

Friday Fun and Saturday Sweetness

After Charlotte woke up from her morning nap, I nabbed a few photos. The ones below are my favorites. I'm a little photo crazy.

"Ohhh, Books!"

On another note, my stash of diapers came in! Actually, late Wednesday night, I stumbled upon a "Seconds Sale" at Cotton Babies - meaning they were selling cosmetically flawed products at a discount. I felt like a kid in a candy store and bought 6 more diapers at a discount. So fun! Lucky for me, I stumbled across it when I did; by 8am they were sold out.

Aunt Helen came over in the afternoon and played with Charlotte while I cooked and cleaned for dinner with Connie, David and Augustine. As I was cleaning frantically, my first thought was, why the charade of cleanliness? Shouldn't our friends accept us and our messes? Cleaning up after Chralotte often feels like cleaning up after a tornado that roams from room to room. But then I realized, that its not the cleanliness that matters, but rather the desire to create a welcoming environment for our guests. I enjoy a clean house too, but face quite a challenge keeping up!

We enjoyed dinner and the company of good friends while the kiddos really hit it off. I love watching Charlotte with other tots - it makes me look forward to having more children.

This morning, Charlotte let us sleep in an extra 45 minutes - amazing how exciting 45 extra minutes changes your outlook on the day. After chasing the "tornado" around the house for a while, Fred pulled out the guitar while Charlotte watched and listened, mesmerized. Watching my husband and daughter together fills me with warm fuzzies; my life is Blessed.

Charlotte LOVES Miss Maddie and her toys.

Ahh, more stuff to get into!

My New Camera!

YAY! Now I can get that funny Charlotte face captured instantly!

But this was my first shot. What a cutie, eh?

Charlotte's Bows:

One of Charlotte's toys:

Unfortunatlly, the camera didn't arrive until 5:30 yesterday, so I couldn't test it out on my favorite subject. Luckily, Fred got these just-out-of-bed shots this morning!

Lots more to learn about operating this camera - I am going to need a class!

Cloth Diapers - $10 to TRY IT!

Man, I just found this link!

http://www.jilliansdrawers.com/cdcm.html

Basically, this company will let you try diapers for only $10. With a deposit of $100, this web site will send you a trail set of all kinds of diapers to use for 21 days. After the 21 days, you can return the diapers and get a refund of $90. If you decide to keep ALL of the trial items, they refund $10 to you!

I wish I'd found it sooner - it would have taken a lot of guesswork out what to "try" for cloth diapering. I just ordered 12 of the one size bumGenius diapers. Maybe I should not wash any of them and try these out. Hmmm, maybe I am too indecisive.

Jeff & Elizabeth's Wedding

So this weekend Charlotte chilled with her Aunts Christy and Helen and her Grandaunt Paula while we spent some adult time enjoying the festivities surrounding Jeff and Elizabeth's wedding.

Since Fred participated as a groomsman, we passed the weekend close to all of the action! Friday night we had the pleasure of attending the rehearsal dinner at Goode Company's Armadillo Palace. The good Texas BBQ always satisfies my taste buds, and the company made the evening a change from the L-O-N-G work week.

Saturday I waited with the Groom and his Groomsmen for 3 o'clock to roll around.

Jeff, the picture of calm, cool, and collected, took some last minute dancing pointers from the flower girl.

Fred helped the Father of the Bride with his hankie, since he had bigger things on his mind.

A major perk of arriving early with my groomsman hubby: a rock star view!

The beauty of St. Anne's Catholic Church added to the traditional Nuptial Mass.

I just love this part!

Another thing I don't usually get to see unless I'm hanging with the Wedding Party:

We followed the Limo the a wonderful New Orleans style reception at the Junior League.

At the reception we got down to business taking advantage of the open bar, loading up at the mashed potato bar, eating cake, and dancing to the great live band while we caught up with old friends and made new ones.

After seeing the Bride and Groom off, we met back up with them (and about 15 other people!) at the St. Regis Hotel bar for a post-reception celebration!

Grandaunt Paula

Charlotte's Grandaunt Paula came to visit this week, so are spending a lot of time with her. Tonight, we joined her for a Mexican dinner at Molina's. Charlotte gives some crazy kisses! Mouth wide open she plants one on your face (or chin, or wherever), hums (hmmmmmm) and finishes with a soft "aaaa" as she pulls away. You can see Grandaunt Paul eats it up!

Mother's Day

For Mother's Day, Charlotte SLEPT IN! What a wonderful gift!

Fred showed his appreciation with the gift of a *NEW* Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi Digital SLR Camera followed by donuts and coffee. Unfortunately, it doesn't arrive until Thursday, but I can't wait to use it!

We feasted with lunch at Kim Son, where Charlotte made herself the center of attention, as always. What a cutie-pie! Look at that toothy grin!

The Experiment Resumes!

Okay, I know some of you are following the cloth experiment, so let me catch you up. I waited patiently after Charlotte's rash to receive the laundry detergent I ordered off the internet. My choice was Allens Naturally. While it was not cheap for my 32oz bottle ($14.50 + shipping), I washed my first load in our HE washer yesterday and the 1/4 oz. (1.5 tsp) had me doing several extra rinses - next time I am going to try just 1 tsp. This stuff is going to last forever!

Since I had everything washed and cleaned, I thought I'd post a picture of my stash. One of my Bummis (the flowered one, boo!) is going back to Cotton Babies because the Velcro tab came unstitched after a couple of uses and two washes. Hopefully, they handle the exchange OK since I washed it. But seriously! It shouldn't fall apart like that. The wipes are just cheap washcloths from Target. I figure why spend a lot of money on "real cloth wipes" when a washcloth should work just as well.

Wish me luck as we go back into cloth today! If all goes well this week, I will fill out my stash, probably with the bulk of it in the BumGenius One Size pocket diaper, but with some AIOs as well. I might even throw in a Blueberry Minky (will post a pic if I do) and a NEW One Size AIO organic from BumGenius. Don't tell Fred though - those are more expensive splurges ;-). I'm also going to need some Diaper pail liners and wet bags to store my dirty diapes.

My current assessment of the cloth diaper experiment? Current innovations in cloth diapers make them almost as convenient as disposable diapers. The biggest differences can be narrowed down to extra laundry and poop.

Poop, by far, marks the major concern most people have,"What about the poop?" While I may stand alone, as a parent, I feel more comfortable with poop than I ever imagined I could. I feel like I've cleaned it off of almost any surface imaginable. (See this post: Poopy Explosion) Almost every one of her earlier outfits had poop on it at some point. Cleaning it off of a cloth diaper, therefore, isn't much different.

With an exclusively breast-fed newborn (no formula or solids), there is no need to even worry about the poop. Since only liquid goes in, everything that comes out is water-soluble. A first wash on cold removes all the mess in the wash, no problem.

With a formula fed baby, or baby who eats solid food, the poop needs to go down the toilet. Two things can make this easier (1) a rice paper liner in the diaper or (2) a kitchen-sink like diaper sprayer attached to the water line to the toilet. The rice paper liner catches the poop and can be tossed into the toilet, keeping most of the poop off the diaper. A diaper sprayer can be purchased or homemade and installed on the toilet to spray poop from the diaper into the toilet.

All in all, I am not a huge fan of the modern take on old-fashioned cloth - the prefold closed with a snappi (instead of safety pins) and covered with a wrap style cover (instead of plastic pants!). They fit with a lot of bulk, which I am unaccustomed to with disposable diapers. I don't mind using them around the house because they are inexpensive and I can use the pockets and all in one diapers when we go out and about. The AIOs and Pockets allow for a trimer fit without over-bulking Charlotte's pants.

The All-in-Ones and Pocket diapers give the ease of disposables with the advantages of cloth. They are, by far, my favorite.

The only reason I can see myself picking something that isn't a pocket or traditional AIO? The pockets have suedecloth or microfleece up against baby's bum; allowing moisture to pass through them to the soaker underneath and keeping the baby dry. Unfortunately, some babies have a sensitivity to the synthetic fiber. If Charlotte proves to be one of those babies, I will need to rethink my purchases to include only natural fibers against her tooshie. There are other options that I haven't gone into at all, such as fitted and contoured (natural fiber) cloth diapers - which need covers but fit trimmer than a prefold.

Wow, this was going to be a short, quick, post to show off my stash. I hope that anyone who is on the fence about cloth diapering will garnish information they need from my blog, and that my ramblings won't go unheard. My suggestion to those toying with the idea of cloth? Make a $100 investment in a day's worth of cloth diapers - including something SUPER EASY to use, and give it a try. I know my readership extends beyond people I know personally, but feel free to ask a question in the comments.

Bug's Busy Baby Day

First, this morning, Charlotte crawled her way to the basket of books that I read to her. I began reading to her when she was 6 or 7 weeks old, and now always read to her as part of our nap time routine. She likes to touch the pictures. The other day she realized there are HOLES in the pages of "The Hungry Little Caterpillar." Every time we would finish a book, I'd place it into the basket, and she would look down longing. HA! No more! The basket sits next to a bottom shelf stacked with CDs; I am lucky she did not have any interest in pulling those all down!

After her nap, we met some of the ladies from my mom's group at the TotSpot at the Houston Children's Museum. Its a WAY fun place with kids everywhere. Its amazing how the little crawlers seem to have no hesitation in crawling over anything in their way, be it toy, pillow, soft block, or another slow moving child. Luckily, Charlotte doesn't seem to mind the other kids climbing over her. She DOES mind when they reach a toy she was crawling after before she does.

Have I ever mentioned that my daughter vocalizes LOUDLY when things don't go exactly her way?

The best though, is that even with all of the excitement and new (to her) toys, she still managed to spot a bit of paper/lint up against the wall from three feet away and went straight for it. Sigh. My child has an obsession for the things she can't have. If she manages to get a piece of paper in her hand, she will literally do everything she can to keep you from getting the paper out of it - beginning with trying to keep you from grabbing her hand at all, and of course follows up by screaming in protest.

These bubbles are pretty cool:

Action shot: on the move!

Daddy surprised us by catching an earlier flight home from Las Vegas. YAY! We missed him so much. The earlier flight meant he could play with Charlotte and give her the usual bedtime bath.

Thats all for now, folks!

A Special Note for Daddy While He is Away

Dearest Daddy,

Guess what? Today was a really big day for me. Mommy thought it would be fun if we shared it with you in a video. She's a little too excited about the whole thing, so don't mind that she sounds ridiculously goofy!

I am going to practice a lot so I can show you myself when you get home. Meanwhile, I am going to show Mommy all the things that really need baby-proofing!

Mommy and I miss you. Mommy does a pretty good job with bath time, but she doesn't make bath time nearly as fun as you do. She says it's bedtime now, so I have to go.

Goodnight, Daddy! I love you!

Love,

Mary Charlotte

Photos for Fun

"Look at me, I'm crawling!
-HAHA, just kidding! Fooled you again!"
"What you looking at?"

"Bubbles! How do you catch them?"

Cloth Diaper Pause...

So, since I was unable to find one of the "most recommended" laundry detergents that is ALSO suited for an HE washer, I settled for the Seventh Generation stuff that they have at HEB (and Whole Foods & Central Market - anyone know of another healthy food/earthy kind of place?) that has enzymes in it. I knew ahead of time that enzymes can cause rashes on SOME babies. Turns out Charlotte is one of the SOME. Or at least, that is my current deduction, based on the fact that her little bum started turning red yesterday while we were out all afternoon - and this reference from the Pinstripes and PolkaDots web page:

Personal Note: We used this detergent (Tide Free) back in the first year of diapering. It did an excellent job of cleaning the diapers. However, when we switched I realized that my oldest child was sensitive to enzymes. The redness that only came when we were out and about for the day or visiting the grandma's never came back when we switched to an enzyme free detergent. Enzymes effect skin the longer the diaper is on. If you change frequently like I did, skin damage from enzymes can go undetected.

So I pulled her out of cloth while I search for a place in Houston that sells HE compatible laundry detergent free of brighteners, fabric softeners, enzymes, dyes, and fragrances. I've found one online store (based in Houston) and another pharmacy in Sugar Land that sells SOMETHING that will work. Hopefully, one has what I need in stock.

Just in case anyone is interested, here is the link to the detergents page that just about every cloth diaper website references on laundry: http://www.pinstripesandpolkadots.com/detergentchoices.htm

I never knew Houston had so little interest in all things natural.

Maybe there is room in the market for my own retail business?

Will let you know how the hunt for detergent goes.

Adventures in Cloth Diapering

...none

....just a bunch of excitement trying to decide if I'm using too much detergent.

I like the all in ones and the pockets best. The prefolds with covers are really bulky and Charlotte won't sit still long enough for my inexperienced fingers to get them together. I'll keep them for around the house back-up, but thats probably the extent of my prefold venture. Maybe baby #2 will see more prefolds (since I can start when he doesn't try to roll over the second he hits the changing table!)

Going to wash and wear daily for a while and see if any one diaper comes out a favorite. Then I'll build a good stash.

So far, so easy....who knew?
