Magic Baby Wishes
Charlotte this morning, holding a bottle of blue bath salts: I wish for a new baby!
Me: Oh, you want another baby, Charlotte?
MC: Yes! (rubbing the bottle with her hand) Is this a magic bottle?
Me: No, it isn't magic.
MC: Oh. I thought it was magic.
Me: But you want another baby?
MC: Yes! And then the new baby and the baby can fight!
Me: Oh, no! I don't want that. I want them to be friends.
MC: Oh, then I don't want a new baby.
What? What kind of child have I created?

Of Unicorns and Uniforms
Me: Charlotte, next year when you go to school you get to wear a uniform.
Charlotte: (Big eyes and bouncing up and down.) Yaaaaayyyy!!!
Me: Wow, you are really excited about clothes.
Charlotte: (deflated) Oh. I thought you said I was going to get a unicorn.
Sorry, kiddo.

The Sweetest Girl in the World
Okay, so I am biased. (How many times have I said that, anyway? Too many to count.)
Today was supposed to be a productive kind of day. You know the kind of day where you have your list, snacks stored for the kids, and get them in and out of car seats over and over again as you tackle those to-dos? Well, we tackled those errands with much enthusiasm, only to find that the shoe repair place couldn't fix my not quite 30 year old boots for Charlotte to wear again (they need to see a boot maker to for new soles - not in the budget), the camera repair place can't fix my camera (it needs to go to Canon), and the tailor MIA to make sure my dress alterations are right.
While we were at the camera repair place, looking at all of the lenses and cameras Charlotte asked, "Mommy, which one are you going to get!?"
"Oh, I am not here to get a camera, babe, I need to get this one fixed."
After leaving the shop, Charlotte said, "Mommy, they couldn't fix your camera?"
"No, sweetie."
"Why didn't you get a new camera?"
"Because we went there to see if we could get this one fixed."
"Why didn't you just ask, them, 'can you please give me a new camera?' and then they give you one you want?"
"Because that costs a lot of money, Charlotte."
"You have money to buy it."
"No sweetie, I don't have enough money right now to buy a new camera. That is why we have to take care of the things we own, because we might not have enough money to buy a new one if we break what we already have."
She seemed to ponder this for a while, but I figured it was a good lesson in we can't just have everything we want.
Anyway, we get home and Charlotte goes into her toys and brings me her toy camera, "Here, Mommy, you can borrow my camera!"
Melt my heart.

More church fun
Frederick can sign the word please and says, "ease!"
This is ridiculously cute, and he has probably been rewarded with far to many things he shouldn't have (like M&M candies).
As we knelt after communion, at the end of an embarassment free mass, he really wanted to touch the sweater of the elderly lady in front of us who had chosen not to kneel. I held him just out of reach and he was frustrated.
He just kept silently pleading for one little touch by signing the word, "please." sorry kiddo.

Before I Forget
The worst thing about not blogging as often anymore, is that there are so many things I will forget if I don't write them down. I already find myself remembering things I'd forgotten if I go back to the posts I wrote in the months after Charlotte was born. It makes me sad to realize that as fast as these years are flying by, I am already forgetting little things. I can't even imagine my children being any age other than the present, so the pictures and videos provide invaluable glimpses into the things my memory has forgotten.
Charlotte, as three-year-olds will, continues to say things that make me smile and laugh. The other day, as we were trying on Flower Girl dresses for Uncle Bruce's wedding, she said seriously, "Someday, when I'm bigger like Mommy, I might be a grown-up."
Equally important, it might due to remember the lessons I've learned. Especially about the things NOT to do. Most recently, for example, the kids and I slept until not long before Fred had to go to work...and I needed to take a shower. Sometimes I get these dumb ideas like, They will be fine playing while I take a quick shower. I mean, really, just because it has worked out once or twice before, doesn't mean it will work out again.
We have a spacious bathroom, so I hauled the kids in and set them on the floor with some toys. They played nicely there on the floor while I got the water going and was getting ready to hop in the shower. As I'm getting ready to pull the door closed, Frederick comes toddling over and starts climbing into the shower. Already wet myself, I decide to strip his PJs off and let him climb in with me. Except he won't let me put him down on the floor, and Charlotte wants to join us. After figuring out how to wash my hair with one hand and not drop the squirmy baby (and a near miss from getting soap in his eyes), and with the little people in tears, I had to get all of us out of the shower without one of us freezing to death, namely ME.
So note to self, shower when someone else is home.

Out of Mouths and on to the Blog
A few recent gems:
Charlotte, while I was looking for new socks at Target, "Mommy, look at all the huge panties!" Repeated several times while I endured funny looks from fellow customers.
Also TODAY, December 30, in Target, "But Mommy, I didn't get to ask Santa anything for Christmas! Santa didn't bring toys for the boys and girls. I need more toys! It is still Christmas!" Ensue tears as I explain to other customers that she is simply going through withdrawal.
This comment made Fred worry, "Mommy, when I grow bigger and bigger, I can't live here anymore. I will have to live with something like a boy."
And sometimes, the funny things come out of my mouth, and not Charlotte's.
"Charlotte, get your naked bottom OFF of the Baby Jesus! We don't treat the Baby Jesus that way!"
Oh, the things you never imagined you'd have to say.
Frederick doesn't say much of anything yet, though he has fully mastered pointing and grunting at whatever he wants. And rolling across the floor in a full tantrum when you don't let him have whichever choking hazard/dangerous item he has his eye on. Good times!

My Three Year Old
There are some days that I look at my baby boy as I enjoy his rambling bables and cringe a little as I realize this moment will not last forever, and someday, he too will be three.
I'm not going to lie. Parenting a three year old is a lot tougher than parenting a nine month old. It requires a lot more patience than I ever imagined. It requires a lot more patience than I have on some days. The more hours I work (and I have been working quite a bit more in recent months), the less patience I have. It is hard to come home from work to plunge right into childcare and dinner prep without any time to decompress. I don't know how moms who work full time manage. I don't know how I manage.
It's draining to be drained and then pulled by a three year old that just wants the attention of her Mommy.
But she is a bright and amazing little girl. And I am going to stop complaining about being tired, and try to squeeze out a few more drops of patience when I think mine is about out. She says some of the craziest, cutest things and I hardly remember to find them hilarious anymore. So, in an effort to remember the crazy things my sweet little girl says, I'm going to write more of them down to share here. You know, like I did in the good old days.
Charlotte to me while I was watching the opening scene to a new TV series just before taking her to bed:
"Mommy, what is this terrible movie?" - How do you really feel about it, Charlotte?
As we passed an empty carnival in an old mall parking lot: "Mommy, why is that carnival so sad?"
And sometimes, I have to wonder, where in the heck does she come up with this stuff: "Oh my goodness of the earth!"
Then, there was the other morning, when we were with our Mom's group and she broke away from the kids she was playing with, ran over to me, and proclaimed, "Mommy, I love you!" and scampered back to her games.
I love you, Charlotte!

You LOVE It!
Charlotte (running in with a multi-colored drawing): Mommy! I made this for you!
Me: Oh, thank you, Charlotte.
Charlotte: You LOVE it!
She wanted to hang it on the wall, but I convinced her the refrigerator would do just as well.
---
Every night at bedtime, as I tuck her in, Charlotte asks, "Mommy, are you gonna come check on me?"
Every night I say, "Of course, Charlotte, I will be back to check on you."
"You gonna check on Frederick?"
"Yes, sweetheart, I'm going to check on him too."
At first I couldn't figure out why we were having this conversation every night, and then I realized that I often say during the day, "Hold on a second, Charlotte, I'm going to go check on Frederick real quick." I guess she wants to make sure I'm checking on her while she's sleeping too :-).

Funny Kid
I want to make sure I write down more of the funny things Charlotte says so I don't forget them later. We heard these comments this weekend when Fred fixed some leaky plumbing and a broken hot water valve.
Fred's facebook status:
Fred's facebook status:
Fred Sanchez When ever I pick up my tools to fix things around the house, my 2 year old daughter says the funniest things: "Daddy, don't hurt yourself." and "You broke it, AGAIN!" I guess daddy's home improvement skills need improving.I must also point out that she also says things like, "Good job!" when helping Daddy work.
